New Shelby Co. Voting Center Named For Civil Rights Leader James Meredith

(Memphis, TN) — The first African-American to enroll at the University of Mississippi is being honored in Memphis. James Meredith was admitted to Ole Miss in 1962. In 1966, Meredith was shot while on a walk from Memphis to Jackson, Mississippi that was meant to encourage voter registration. Yesterday, the new Shelby County voting center on Poplar Avenue was dedicated as the James Meredith Building.
