Shelby County Charter Shools closing

More than half a dozen Shelby County charter schools will be forced to close at the end of this school year. All seven are on the Tennessee Board of Education’s priority list for low performing schools. The closures will leave 15-hundred students looking for new schools next year.

UOM Asking Marsha Blackburn to take down a campaign ad.

University of Memphis officials are asking Marsha Blackburn’s Senate campaign to take down a political social media post featuring the school’s cheerleaders. Over the weekend the Congresswoman’s campaign posted a video of Memphis cheerleaders chanting her name. The video was taken before Friday’s game against Georgia State. The caption said “Tigers for Marsha, Marsha, Marsha.”

Kirby high

Kirby High School students resumed classes today after being out most of the year because of a rat infestion. Over 800 students are being relocated to other facilites. The freshmen and sophomores are going to school at Du Bois Charter school, while those students attend class at Cummings Baptist Church. The Juniors and seniors are being transfer to Kirby Middle School, and special needs students are at Southwind High. Officials expect Kirby high to be out of commission through the first semester.

TWO LOCALS FINALISTS IN SCHOLARSHIP TESTING

About 1.6 million juniors in more than 22,000 high schools entered the 2019 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2017 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.
Approximately 16,000 students across the country and 138 in Mississippi were named semifinalists… and they include Olivia Russell of Southaven and Katie Williams of Hernando… who will now each have the opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $31 million. Finalists are notified in February, and National Merit Scholarships are offered in the spring.

The Memphis Pink Palace will reopen in December.

Memphis’ Pink Palace will reopen in December. The Mansion will have a Clyde Parke Miniature Circus… Piggly Wiggly and Country Store replica’s that will allow kids to shop and check out. The ODFW is using DNA to track a cougar that killed a women.

The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife says it’s tracking a cougar that killed a woman who was hiking near Mount Hood. Department officials say they sent some of the cougar’s DNA to a lab for testing. The U.S. Forest Service closed down 14 different trails and more than 29,000 acres of forest land around the Salmon-Huckleberry Wilderness on Thursday, citing a need for “public safety and for the safety of the state” as trackers try to capture the cougar.

DeSoto County Schools bury a 9-11 times capsule.

The DeSoto County School District’s Parent Advisory Counc…il turned its Tuesday meeting this week into a special program to honor …victims and those who helped in the aftermath of the 9-11 terror attacks.”…The desoto times reports….The highlight of the meeting… which featured music, readings and speeches, was the burial of a time capsule… that is filled with letters of thanks… from students at each of the schools in the state’s largest school district.

A Mid-South man was arrested for allegedly shooting at his neighbors home.

A Mid-South man was arrested on Wednesday after allegedly opening fire on his neighbors home….because he thought her kids had knocked on his door. The mother called the police on September 2 and said Richard Brackey opened fire at her house…at the time she was outside her neighbor. A few days later…while questioning Brackey about the incident… Bracky allegedly told his wife the officers were at their home to question him “about when I fired the shots the other night.”

Mississippians are heading to the East coast for disaster relief..

Mississippi crews from the Salvation Army and Entergy are headed to the East Coast as Hurricane Florence takes aim at the Carolinas. A storm surge of up to 12 feet is expected from the storm…Some places are expecting 30 inches in some places, creating life-threatening flash flooding from South Carolina to Northern Virginia. Entergy Mississippi is sending about 100 line workers…The Salvation Army’s is sending personnel and equipment which includes five mobile feeding units.

4 Citites in Desoto county are ranked among mississippe’s top 10 safest.

According to FBI crime reports 4 of DeSoto County cities are listed in Mississippi’s “Top 10 Safest Cities. The entire state of Mississippi is rated 15 % below the national average for violent crime. Efforts in Horn Lake to improve the safety in their city has paid off… they ranked forth in the state for safe cities…followed by Southhaven at number 5 Hernando at 6 and Olive Branch is ranked at number 9.
