Judge Asks For More Funding For Juvenile Offenders

A juvenile court judge in Shelby County is asking county leaders for millions more dollars in funding. Judge Tarik Sugarman is asking for 4.6 million dollars, on top of the 16 million dollar proposed budget, to add as many as 40 positions in juvenile court. Half of the staff would go toward child welfare cases, while the others would work with child delinquincy. Judge Sugarmon says the extra funding would help to prevent repeat juvenile offenders. Commissioenrs are expected to discuss the proposal on June 26th.
